SCAIR-USD Life, Personal, and Career Offices — NA-FACES

Southern California American Indian Resource Center (SCAIR) — in partnership with the University of San Diego (USD) Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program — open two new satellite counseling facilities in San Diego and Alpine for their NA-FACES (Native American Forensic Assessment, Consultation and Education Services) program.

Executive Director Wanda Michaelis, SCAIR, posed for a picture with Ronn Johnson, Ph.D., USD. The two founded the USD-SCAIR NA-FACES program.

Ronn Johnson, Ph.D., ABPP, said:

"The NA-FACES program is designed to provide a wide range of counseling and mental health services to Native Americans both on the reservation and urban settings. We've placed clinical mental health interns in these two locations. These interns provide a wide range of personal counseling and career counseling services to those populations.

"Today is a very important day because it recognizes the launching of the counseling offices. I am very excited about the facilities because they provide great reception areas for clients, and some lovely counseling rooms that will make it very convenient and comfortable for clients to come and receive the needed services.

"The services we provide include general counseling services. We do career assessments and career counseling services. We also work with people who have been traumatized from a wide variety of incidents in their lives. We also screen people for alcohol and drug problems (and) we treat people for those problems. We hope to someday extend our services to include children and adolescents."

Traditional blessings and smudgings were performed by Verna Antonio.

Good times at the Southern California American Indian Resource Center offices, some our good friends:

TEAM SCTCA: San Diego TANF Site Manager Lynne Ray Smith arrived with some of his team members and bearing a gift for the USD counselors.

SCTCA staff members posed for a group photo. Tribal TANF professionals from across San Diego County came to the grand opening to meet the USD counselors and tour their new SCAIR counseling facilities.

SCAIR guests smiled for a snapshot.

A SCTCA high-definition video (HDV) camera was on location to record the historic event, and TANF professionals had some fun with the electronic news gathering (ENG) process.

SCTCA field reporter posed for a production still just before doing an on-camera interview with SCAIR Board President William Johnson.

Family nutrition is a large part of any SCAIR-sponsored event — Tracey Stevens (SCAIR office manager) helped coordinate the open house.
